The Basics

What is Pickleball?

The world's fastest-growing sport — and the most fun you'll have with a paddle. Here's everything you need to know.

TRY YOUR FIRST SESSION

A sport for everyone

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It's played on a court roughly one-third the size of a tennis court, with a solid composite paddle and a perforated polymer ball.

The game can be played as singles or doubles, and the smaller court means less running, more rallying, and faster learning. Most people can pick up the basics within their first session.

Originally invented in 1965, pickleball has exploded globally and is now the fastest-growing sport in Australia. It's social, it's competitive, and it's seriously addictive.

The Rules

How to play

Serving

The serve is hit underhand, diagonally cross-court. The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed (the 'two-bounce rule').

The Kitchen

The non-volley zone (aka 'the kitchen') extends 7 feet from the net. You can't hit the ball out of the air while standing in this zone.

Scoring

Games are typically played to 11, win by 2. Only the serving team can score. In doubles, both partners get to serve before it switches.

Rally & Win

The rally continues until someone faults — hitting into the net, out of bounds, or volleying in the kitchen. Strategy and placement beat raw power.
